Most builders interact with an RMC plant through a phone call and a delivery. They call, order a grade and quantity, and a mixer shows up at the site. What they do not see is the 12-to-16-hour operation that makes that delivery possible: the testing, the designing, the batching, the dispatching, and the quality checks that happen before a single drop of concrete leaves the gate.
5:00 AM: Raw Material Testing
The day starts in the lab, not at the batching plant. Before any concrete is produced, the quality control team tests the raw materials. Aggregates are tested for gradation using standard sieves. The fineness modulus of sand is calculated. Moisture content is measured because aggregate moisture directly affects the water-cement ratio. If the sand is wetter than expected and the batching computer is not adjusted, the actual W/C ratio will be higher than designed, silently reducing strength. Any material that does not meet specification is flagged and held.
6:00 AM: Mix Design Review
The day's orders are reviewed. Each order has a site with specific requirements: grade, slump, placement method, element type, distance from plant. The mix design engineer reviews or creates the mix for each job. A ground-floor raft foundation gets a different mix than a 10th-floor column pour, even if both are M25. The variables: aggregate size, slump, admixture dosage, and water content. Every mix design is documented and becomes part of the batch record.
7:00 AM: First Batch
The batching plant comes alive. The operator inputs the mix design parameters. The system weighs each material to precision. IS 4926 allows plus or minus 2 percent for cement and water, and plus or minus 3 percent for aggregates. The materials are discharged into the mixer drum. Mixing begins: a minimum of 70 to 100 revolutions at mixing speed. The batch slip is printed: grade, mix design reference, time of batching, quantity, truck number.
7:15 AM: Dispatch
The mixer leaves the plant. From this moment, the transit clock is running. The GPS system logs the departure and tracks the route in real time. If traffic is unusually heavy and a second mixer is scheduled for the same site, the dispatch sequence is adjusted — the second mixer is held at the plant rather than sent out to wait on the road.
7:30 AM: Site Arrival and Slump Test
At the site, the slump test is conducted from the first discharge. The result should match the design slump within acceptable tolerances. Cube samples are cast, typically 6 cubes from a set of deliveries. These cubes are labelled and sent for controlled curing and testing at 7 and 28 days.
8:00 AM to 6:00 PM: Continuous Operations
A busy plant runs 15 to 30 deliveries in a typical day. The rhythm is constant: batch, load, dispatch, track, repeat. Between deliveries, the QC team runs additional tests. Equipment maintenance happens in parallel: mixer drums are cleaned between shifts, weigh hoppers are calibrated, conveyor belts are checked.
10:00 PM to 2:00 AM: Night Pour Execution
Large pours — raft foundations, continuous slabs, mass concrete — are often scheduled at night to avoid daytime heat. A raft foundation pour can require 20 to 30 mixers in continuous sequence, each arriving within 30 minutes of the previous one to prevent cold joints. Night pours have advantages: lower ambient temperatures, less traffic, and uninterrupted placement windows. By 2:00 AM, the last mixer returns. The drums are washed. The plant goes quiet — for about 3 hours.

An RMC plant is not a factory that pours concrete into trucks. It is a quality-controlled, time-sensitive, logistics-intensive operation that runs 16 or more hours a day, every day. The mixer that arrives at your site carrying 6 cubic metres of concrete represents hundreds of decisions made correctly.
